Since a lot of people have been asking, “Why are there so many long field goals being kicked in the NFL this season?” I created this article and accompanying video to shed more light and answer this question in detail.

There was a rule change this season where previously, NFL teams would get the “K Balls” just before the start of a game; now, they get a batch of kicking balls at the start of the season. They’re able to get them worked in, thus adding 5+ yards on kicks as we’ve seen. This boosts the range of kickers and the confidence of NFL head coaches and special teams coordinators actually to attempt these longer kicks.

Additionally, kicking techniques are improving. The use of crystal clear slow-mo video analysis, along with expert kicking coaches, allows NFL kickers to hone their technique and elevate their game. Not to mention the ever-evolving fitness routines and in-gym workouts that in decades past kickers wouldn’t get involved in, I believe it all comes together to now enable the best NFL kickers to actually make 75-80 yard field goals. YES, you read that right, I believe sometime in the very near future, unless there is an equipment rule change, we will see 75 to 80 yard field goals in the NFL. In fact, this off-season, when the new rule change was announced, I predicted 70+ yard field goals and a flurry of 60+ yard attempts for this 2025 NFL season, and sure enough, it came to fruition.

The Jacksonville Jaguars kicker, Cam Little, set two records this season (a 68-yard field goal is the NFL record for the longest field goal made in a regular season game). He kicked that this weekend, and also in this year’s preseason, he hit a 70-yard field goal in a game. He was a very good kicker at the University of Arkansas and evolved into an elite NFL kicker over the last two years.

Here is an AI Overview about the new K-Ball, aka kicking ball situation in the NFL:

NFL teams now receive 60 “K-balls” before the start of the season, which they can use to prepare throughout the week before a game. This is a change from the previous rule, where teams only received three new balls within 60–90 minutes of kickoff to prepare on game day. Each team provides three K-balls for officials to inspect and approve before each game, and a ball can be used for a maximum of three games.

In the above YouTube video, I dive into this subject and go into significant detail about all of the factors contributing to fans seeing much longer field goals this year. Learn a lot of behind-the-scenes kicking jargon and strategy, and improve your general knowledge base of all things kicking.
