I tried pilates today at the 24 hour fitness gym in Costa Mesa, CA and was thoroughly impressed with it's applicability to kicking and punting. After a 1 hour session with a class of intense athletes & physically fit men & women, I have decided that pilates is not as easy and 'girly' as I once thought it was! I was sweating a lot and am now sitting on my computer typing this with ice on my legs!
I highly encourage you to try out a pilates session sometime soon. Most of the 24 hour fitness gyms offer it free of charge. It is very useful for kickers and punters because the act of pilates helps make your muscles longer, more flexible, and more stable. You will also develop a stronger 'core' and obtain better balance after a few sessions of pilates.
Some of the common myths I once thought about pilates have been proven wrong since I tried it out for myself today:
(actually Pilates involves flexibility routines, breathing exercises, and core strengthening as well as muscle balance and control.
(actually the class I attended today was made up of about 70% females and 30% males. Most of the people present were very athletic and worked hard!
Go try it out the next time you are in the gym and let me know how it works for you. It will help you as a kicker or punter and should improve your muscle flexibility, core strength, balance, and overall well-being.

There's a lot of hype around this year's NFL draft. If you watch the NFL Network like I do, you have seen and heard about the various guys from college who have gotten into troubles off the field and now may suffer dropping draft spots because of the teams' lowered confidence in them as a person.
It's important to realize that football is a big part of life, but what you do off the field really shows your character. There's so many great athletes out there and so many kickers who want to get D1 scholarships or make it to the pros. What are you doing to do to set your self apart? #1, Make sure that you don't fall into the traps of getting in with the wrong crowd and getting yourself a bad wrap like a lot of these 2008 draft guys did. Learn from their experiences and know that teams will frown upon bad news off the field. Being a champion is about giving 100% on the field and having character wherever you are and in whatever you do.
